But you look better without makeup!

Aren’t we just tired of hearing this phrase over and over again?

To be honest, it is high time I addressed this! So to give a background, my genetics have always been in my favor when it comes to looks. To say it plainly, I always fit the beauty standards. So when I started diving into makeup and posted my tutorials I got a lot of backlash from people saying “You are so beautiful, you don’t need makeup”, “Good, but you look better without makeup”, and so on. I realized that people did not actually get the point behind using makeup, and many young girls and boys out there are being exposed to the wrong ideas that it is a tool to hide your real self or they NEED makeup to look good. The same goes for the idea that people who wear makeup are not confident in their skin and hence use makeup to cover it up. So I decided to list out the reasons why you should or should not use makeup.

Reasons why you should not wear makeup:

  1. Because someone asked you to “Put some makeup on!”: It’s really sad but most of the time, it’s someone close to you telling you that. Sometimes our moms or our sisters (Not brothers, they make fun with or without it XD), but you have to realise, that if you’re confident enough in your own skin, no amount of pressure should force you into it.
  2. To change your original SELF: When I say “change”, it doesn’t mean that you have to stick to natural makeup and not go dramatic if you want to, but to remember that makeup is meant to enhance your beauty, not to change who you are. Where I come from, the obsession with fairer skin is at its peak right now. I see so many makeup videos where the before and after skin is at least 5 shades apart, sometimes more, and the makeup artists are doing it because the clients ask for “Fairer skin”. While some makeup artists are refraining from the practice, there’s still a long way to go.
  3.  Because everyone is doing it: Peer pressure is a real thing when it comes to makeup. You see a girl wearing mascara to school/college, you see her get complimented, soon everyone at school starts wearing mascara, and you feel pressured to wear it too because it’s the thing that’s trending, at that point you ask yourself “Do I really want to wear it, or am I just drawn to it because everyone else is doing it?”. Maybe you have naturally long lashes and don’t find the need to wear mascara, or maybe you have short lashes and you’re comfortable with those. The bottom line is, put on only what you like and when you like it, it’s your face and your choice.

Reasons why you should wear makeup:

  1. Because you like it: Nobody in this world NEEDS makeup. Not that woman with pores, or that teenager with acne, or the guy with freckles, or even that old lady with wrinkles. None! But any of these could WANT it. Makeup is a choice, not a necessity! It’s like changing your hair color or changing your dressing style. The grey matter is a curious little thing. It always wants something new, and makeup lets you do that. Even if you wear the same type of makeup every day, it will still never be the same. You have the freedom to experiment and put on a new face every day. This should not mean that you’re not comfortable in your own skin, rather you love change and experimentation.
  2.  It’s an Art: Just like an artist swirls his paintbrush on an empty canvas, makeup buffs like me use our face as a canvas and the makeup we put on is not less than art. It’s Therapeutic! It lets you explore your imagination and bring it to life. Just like any other art form, it gets better over time. From glitters, face pigments, rhinestones, or even a well-performed basic contour, makeup has come a long way so once you let your imagination run wild, there are unlimited things that you can do with it.
  3. Gives you a confidence boost: Deion Sanders said “If you look Good, you feel Good” and I stand by it. Numerous instances where I had an awful day and a bit of lip gloss and cheek tint gave me the pick-me-up I desperately needed. Let’s take the example of first impressions, everyone wants to make a good first impression but does anyone know you when they meet you for the first time? I don’t think so. The first thing anyone sees is how you carry yourself, which is measured by how you look, how you smell, your confidence, and your body language. If you look in the mirror and like what you see, it gives you the confidence to seize the day and chances are the person you meet will see it too. And if a little makeup makes you look and feel good, there’s nothing wrong with using it.
